The name Almaty derives from the Kazakh word for apple (Ð °Ã »Ã ¼Ã °), and thus is often translated as full of apples. B. It is the former capital of Kazakhstan and the nations largest city, with a population of 1,348,500. C. According to the agency of statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan this represents approximately 9% of the countrys population. D. The city is located in a mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan. E. The main objective is to promote Almaty’s image as a garden-city. F. Almaty is a key financial centre in Central Asia. G. One of the largest industries in Almaty is finance. H. Almaty is home to the BTA Bank, which is the largest bank in Central Asia. The Kazakhstan Stock Exchange is based in Almaty.
